The road to Orbetello is magnificent, long and encrusted with invisible restaurants: one would not know that lilac door leads to a dining room unless he was from here, then he would have noticed four trucks in line, parked in the shadow, nearby. Truck drivers are reliable food guides like Michelin or Gambero Rosso will never be able to be, because they know what value for money is, and are open to fried frogs as they are to 'panino with finocchiona'. So are we.
We have two goals today: inspecting the Tower of Saraceni (pictures) and buying local wine from the consortium, whereas spotting the exact location of the consortium is quite the task of the day. People, with navigators and tom-toms, you have no idea what you will go through when in Tuscany: roads that change name according to govern, numbers and colours mixed together (120 Red could be one mile away from 120 Black, and that's ok when you are driving a car, not so much when walking), people who will give you wrong indications just to have a laugh, later, at the Circolo Arci, a rhetorical kind of bar and meeting that deserves a book on its own. We find the consortium and buy tens of liters, for few euros.
One extra hour of driving and Brubeck, windows down, and we get to the tower: perched up on top of a cliff overlooking the sea, this one is an absolute stunner, with a charm, which is unique - it’s not a case it’s been the property of choice for a 007 movie. Composed by a scenic tower and one annex (below), both furnished in a bohemian, elegant style, it features authentic local materials, pale palettes and classic use of spaces, in pure Mediterranean style. Originally an ancient watchtower that dates back to the 13th Century, the property has been frequently restored and offers great views from its terraces and from the swimming pool below. A walkway leads down to the seashore and the private sun deck while a private road leads to the property. The luminous lounge on the first floor offers again various vistas to the Mediterranean Sea, the terrace furnished with table, chairs and sun loungers is a fantastic, evocative spot for relaxing or dining alfresco whilst enjoying the sight of the Tuscan islands on the horizon.
